Smart Coaches Read Behavior
As I was developing a coaching workshop for a client’s managers, I ran across a YouTube clip about how good managers coach by reading behavior. The coaching skill is to read a person’s behavior and respond appropriately without judging or labeling the person. Also, to not let your emotions drive your response.
What behavior do you focus on? Behavior that is task focused or people focused. The YouTube clip begins with the drawing below by Ed Muzio, CEO of Group Harmonics. Once you recognize if the behavior is task or people focus, you can determine if the person is attempting to shape or respond to their environment. This provides the insight in how to respond appropriately in coaching the individual.
I invite you to watch this YouTube clip. I’m going to introduce this approach in my coaching workshop because I see great value in it as an effective coaching tool.
Now, for those of you who are familiar with DiSC, see if you can identify which of the 4 behavioral tendencies is represented by the four quadrants that Ed Muzio presents. There is a definite correlation which can be used when working with DiSC.
Enjoy and let me know your thoughts.
